Prosopis cineraria is a species
of flowering tree in the pea family, Fabaceae. Leaves are double compound. The
leaflets are dark green and have a tiny point. The tree is evergreen or nearly
so. It produces new flush leaves before summer. The flowers are small in size
and yellow or creamy white in color, appear from March to May after the new
flush of leaves.
Shami tree is one of the sacred
trees in the world, and which is worshipped since ancient ages. Well, it is

Text “Mahabharata” has a legend that when Pandavas were exiled for 14 years, they
had to spend one last year in disguise. It was during that period that they
submitted all their arms to a Shami tree and received them back intact after
the period of disguise was over i.e. after one year. They worshiped the Shami
and asked for power and victory in the ensuing battle that was fought on the
battlefield of Kurukshetra between Kauravas and Pandavas. Pandavas won the
battle and hence it is believed that the Shami tree gives victory and power to
those who pray to it. On Vijayadashami day people exchange leaves and greet
each other. This custom is popular in Karnataka and Maharashtra states of
India.

Shami is an important medicinal plant. Ayurvedic recommends
it is a treatment for a number of ailments and is eases like a mental disorder,
schizophrenia, respiratory tract infection, excessive heat, herpes, loose
motion, leucorrhoea etc. But different parts of the plant are used for
