Prosopis cineraria is a species of flowering tree in the pea family, Fabaceae. Leaves are double compound. The leaflets are dark green and have a tiny point. The tree is evergreen or nearly so. It produces new flush leaves before summer. The flowers are small in size and yellow or creamy white in color, appear from March to May after the new flush of leaves.

They worshiped the Shami and asked for power and victory in the ensuing battle that was fought on the battlefield of Kurukshetra between Kauravas and Pandavas. Pandavas won the battle and hence it is believed that the Shami tree gives victory and power to those who pray to it. On Vijayadashami day people exchange leaves and greet each other. This custom is popular in Karnataka and Maharashtra states of India.
